Frank Gehry, an American architect, is a leader. His work is noted for its use of natural light and forms that decompose. His experiments with unconventional materials are also part of his work. His designs often deviate from modernist design, but he is not averse to it. His work is influenced by both traditional and contemporary sculpture. He is known as one of today's most important architects.

Born in Toronto, Canada, in 1929, Frank Owen Goldberg moved to Los Angeles with his family at the age of eighteen. He received his Bachelor of Architectural degree at the University of Southern California. He continued his studies at Harvard University in city planning after completing his degree. In 1962, his practice was established in Los Angeles. He married Anita Snyder and had two children. In 2001, he was naturalized as a U.S. citizen. He lives in Santa Monica (California).

He has worked in many roles over his career including architecture, art and landscape design. His past experience includes the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and numerous exhibition designs. He is also the Judge Winey Professor of architecture at the University of Southern California. His current projects include the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi facility and the Facebook headquarters.

He was awarded the Pritzker Prize for architecture in 1989 and the National Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial to 2014, respectively. He has won numerous awards for his work and was a contributor to the Whitney Museum’s 2006 exhibit "European Art". His work has been featured by magazines like Vanity Fair. Vanity Fair named him the "most important architect in our age".


Despite his successes in architecture, he had a varied life that was sometimes challenging. He was an antisemitic child. He was also an experienced truck driver. His father's ill health required him to relocate to Los Angeles. This is where he lived until 1961. After graduating from college, he began to work with Victor Gruen, a Viennese architect. However, he walked out after being told his program was a socially irresponsible approach to architecture.

As an adult, he continued his education in city planning and architecture at Harvard University. There he earned his diploma. He also taught at Yale, the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, and at Yale. He is also a member and past president of the California Yacht Club Marina Del Rey. He holds dual citizenship, both in the United States of America and Canada.

His first skyscraper was the New York by Gehry building, which was completed in 2009. The building's stainless-steel facade beat 220 towers across the globe.

His focus shifted in the late 1980s. During this time, he began to receive larger national commissions. He designed the Vitra International Furniture Manufacturing Facility and Design Museum and Yale Psychiatric Institute as well the Aerospace Museum Los Angeles. He was also responsible for the Chiat/Day Building, Venice, known for its huge, sculpted binoculars.
